Holes

Eva is obsessed with holes. This week she found a bunch of them—in her dad’s slipper, at the end of a paper towel tube, in the lace on my sleeve. “Look! A hole,” she cried with each discovery, jabbing it with fingers, pens, and even a plast…ic knife, as though trying to hack another one next to it.
This was all well and good, until today when she lifted the dog’s tail.
Sleep with one eye open, Bean.  Don’t let your guard down for a second.

Super Worm Moon

Tonight I led Tyler to our deck and pointed at the giant silver moon looming just above the tree tops.

“Tonight’s moon is called the ‘Super Worm moon,’ I said, most informatively. “It gets its name because it rises when it starts getting warmer and the worms come out to play. You see, the moon goes around the earth in an oval, and tonight it’s at its closest point to the earth.  The last time it was this big and bright, your mom and dad were a mere nineteen years old. Pretty fascinating stuff, huh?”

Throughout my speech he tilted his head to the sky and stared in silent reverence, eyes brighter than the moon itself.  “Look, Mama,” he breathed. “It’s a circle!”

Keep it simple, stupid. Every time we forget, the kids are there to remind us.
